"Roads Authority" and Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company Sign MoU to Enhance Electric Vehicle Charging System on Roads

The General Authority for Roads and the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company have signed a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing the electric vehicle charging system across the Kingdom’s road network. This agreement comes as part of ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and raise safety and efficiency standards within the road network by developing infrastructure to support the adoption of electric vehicles.

The authority was represented at the signing by its CEO, Engineer Badr bin Abdullah Al-Dalami, while the company was represented by its CEO, Mr. Mohammed bin Bakr Qazzaz.

The MoU focuses on strengthening cooperation between both parties in the field of electric vehicle infrastructure. This includes exploring mechanisms for providing road-based charging services and identifying investment opportunities that add economic value to the sector.

The agreement also includes joint planning and coordination to identify suitable locations for establishing charging stations within the road network, in alignment with the Saudi Road Code and sector plans. It also aims to ensure that charging station designs comply with road code standards and the traffic safety standards approved by the authority.

The MoU further includes the development of initiatives and studies related to heavy electric vehicles and trucks, including the establishment of high-power charging stations along logistics corridors and their integration with smart transportation infrastructure systems.

Additionally, it aims to enhance the quality of services provided to road users by ensuring that charging stations meet environmental and traffic safety requirements, while incorporating safe access requirements into road design and maintenance projects.

Through this MoU, the authority and the company seek to achieve integration between the electric vehicle charging system and the authority’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This will contribute to improving the experience of road users, enhancing demand and load management, and exploring smart applications.

The agreement also supports strengthening public-private partnerships and increasing local content contributions within the sector.

The "Roads Authority" confirmed its continued implementation of future projects aimed at improving and developing the Kingdom’s road network through continued productive cooperation with its partners, including the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company. The goal is to enhance quality of life in the road sector by adopting modern technologies in line with the sector’s objectives.

These objectives include reducing road fatalities to fewer than 5 cases per 100,000 people, achieving sixth place globally in the Road Quality Index by 2030, ensuring road network coverage with traffic safety factors according to the International Road Assessment Programme (IRAP) classification, and maintaining a high level of service that meets the capacity requirements of the road network.

This reflects the authority’s central role in supervising and regulating the vital road sector, as well as its continuous efforts to achieve the objectives of the Road Sector Strategy, which focuses on safety, quality, and traffic density.
