The Roads General Authority “RGA” and the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company “EVIQ” have signed a Memorandum of Understanding “MoU” aimed at enhancing the electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the Kingdom’s road network.

The agreement forms part of ongoing efforts to improve quality of life and enhance safety and efficiency across the road network by developing infrastructure that supports the adoption of electric vehicles.

The MoU was signed on behalf of RGA CEO, Eng. Badr bin Abdullah Al-Dalami, and on behalf of EVIQ CEO, Mr. Mohammad bin Bakr Gazzaz.

The MoU focuses on strengthening collaboration between the two parties in the development of electric vehicle infrastructure. This includes exploring mechanisms for providing charging services along roads and identifying investment opportunities that can create economic value for the sector.

It also covers joint planning and coordination to identify suitable locations for charging stations across the road network, in alignment with the Saudi Road Code and sector plans. In addition, the parties will work to align station designs with road code requirements and the traffic safety standards adopted by RGA.

The MoU also includes the development of initiatives and studies related to heavy-duty electric vehicles and trucks, including the deployment of high-power charging stations along logistics corridors and their integration with smart transportation infrastructure.

The partnership further aims to enhance the quality of services provided to road users by ensuring that charging stations meet environmental and traffic safety requirements, while incorporating safe access requirements into road design and maintenance projects.

Through the MoU, RGA and EVIQ also seek to integrate EV charging infrastructure with RGA’s Intelligent Transportation Systems “ITS”. This will support a better experience for road users, enable more effective demand and load management, and facilitate the study of smart applications.

The agreement also aims to enhance public-private sector collaboration and increase local content across the sector.

RGA showed its commitment to delivering future projects aimed at improving and developing Saudi Arabia’s road network through continued collaboration with its partners, including EVIQ. These efforts support the Authority’s goal of enhancing quality of life across the roads sector through the adoption of modern technologies.

This work aligns with the objectives of the Roads Sector Programme, which include reducing road fatalities to fewer than five cases per 100,000 people and achieving sixth place globally in the Road Quality Index by 2030. The programme also aims to enhance road safety coverage in line with the International Road Assessment Programme “iRAP” classification and maintain a high level of service that aligns with the capacity of the road network.

These efforts reflect RGA’s central role in overseeing and regulating the Kingdom’s roads sector and its continued commitment to achieving the objectives of the Roads Sector Strategy, which is built around safety, quality and traffic density.
